Many will remember “ Billy the Human Billboard “, who we covered in our previous blog post after he received a HostGator tattoo on the back of his neck. Billy’s HostGator tattoo has sparked a range of responses from: people asking to get this done , outrage, and even proposed boycotts. Someone even went as far as to compare HostGator with human traffickers as you can see in the video below: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXSJUu8-zkU Billy has gone on to receive additional tattoos from other companies (27 and counting), moving him closer to his goal of having the most tattoo advertisements in the Guinness Book of World Records. Since then, Billy is no longer “Billy the Human Billboard”, as he has legally changed his name to “Hostgator Dotcom”. www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6R6O7uqPSc Hostgator Dotcom’s driver license: Hostgator Dotcom’s certificate of name change: If you need to get in touch with Hostgator (Dotcom), follow him on twitter .

August 9 th , 2010 myself and other members of our management team arrived at our new home. Walking around we saw really nice cubicles (not wired), no workstations, and a blow up mattress in Brent’s office. The date for our first training class was August 16 th , we had a total of 7 days to get everything setup for our first Austin employees . We needed at least 40 monitors, we have dual 23.6” monitors on each workstation, yes I am kind of bragging. And we needed at least 20 extra workstations. Monitors were rushed to the office and several trips, including one of my own, back to Houston to grab workstations ensued. All in all on August 16 th we had enough workstations setup for training to begin. It was a very hectic time here in Austin that first week, but I’m proud to say that everything is running smoothly now. The first group of gators we brought on here are working out great, and we are already setting up another training class. I have taken the liberty to post pictures of the office. Here are a few features of our new Austin location: World Class 1100 sq ft Gym complete with lockers and showers (gators sweat a lot). Internet Cafe / LAN Party stations (gators game a lot, see sleeping quarters). Dual 23.6” Monitor setups. Game room complete with arcade games and full size pool table. Also (2) 55″ Flat screen tvs. Outside deck connected to the game room, for BBQ’s and get togethers. Sleeping quarters, for when you just want to nap a bit. (gators are sleepy a lot, see Lan Party). Black and Decker Coffee pot, The 12 Cup kind (nothing but the best). Vending machines that take credit cards (Gators only carry 100s). Really cool lights that only turn on when you walk by! These are just a few of the wonderful additions that we have made to our brand new office. It is a really big step for our company and all the hard work our Austin crew has put in to get things up and running definitely shows. If you are interested in coming to work for HostGator Austin, please submit your resume on our Jobs page . We are currently hiring for Linux Level 1 -3 System Administrators. Dedicated/VPS Tutorials We announced brandable tutorials for our reseller customers a few months back, and the feedback has been great! We are now proud to announce that we are ready to deploy the tutorials for our Dedicated and VPS accounts! If you would like to have this feature installed on your VPS or Dedicated server, please contact support. One of our technicians will be glad to add this to your WHM! Our technicians will put the ticket in a special queue and enable this for you Friday morning. Please let us know of any feedback you have regarding the tutorials. Go Joe! Go! A few months back we announced a deal with Joe Nemechek and NEMCO sports for a sponsorship of their Nationwide car. After seeing what a huge hit we made in our NASCAR debut, beating out some of the competition and all , we decided to sponsor Joe for the remainder of the season! We will be sponsoring Joe’s #87 car for every remaining Nationwide race. We are also sponsoring the Talladega Sprint Cup race with Joe! Shake and Bake! Joe is a great guy and very respected in the NASCAR community, We really could not think of a better driver to support then Mr. Nemechek. So make sure you tune in and watch Joe pass up the competition for the remainder of the Nationwide Series! Follow Joe on Twitter @joenemechek! Till next month, — Josh Loe & The Team at HostGator

On any given day a normal HostGator employee usually encounters several things a normal office might consider ‘out of the ordinary’. A prime example of such an instance are the elevators HG employees use on a daily basis. Both our Houston & Austin locations are very nice offices, however both locations feature elevators which we’re fairly sure were originally assembled in Da Vinci’s workshop out of spare legos a few million years ago. Usually when you step into the elevator in Houston you make it to work on time. Usually… Getting a new office branch up and running is a lot of hard work. So much work in fact that founder Brent Oxley & customer service guru Daniel Collette have decided to bunk down on site. Here’s a quick tour of Daniel’s original HostGator Austin digs: Upon watching this video, founder Brent Oxley and I became concerned. Daniel is actually a personal friend of ours ( you might recognize him and his tattoo) , so naturally we were worried about his general health & happiness. It didn’t seem to us that Daniel was providing himself with an adequate den to thrive in. This was unacceptable. After a lunch discussion with one of our vendors we devised a solution. Construction began immediately upon our return and soon enough we had a beautiful recreation of his natural environment: If you watch the discovery channel or if you’ve ever visited a male friends one-bedroom hovel you’ll most likely deduce that this particular manimal is of the hairy brown backed variety (Troglodyte Capillus Fuscus). Hairy brown backed manimals are native to southeast Texas (and anywhere else natty light is readily found). Troglodyte Capillus Fuscus (like all manimals) are very territorial and require a very specific diet. Thus, we were sure to provide him with some nutritional items (half empty dr pepper cans, hot pockets & bananas) to properly recreate his natural environment. When dealing with Manimals it’s very important to ensure their habitats are kept clean. Our in-house habitat engineers work daily to resolve any odor or otherwise undesirable which may ‘accumulate’ inside the manimals living quarters: With the clients, employees, on-site manimals and various other wonders, working at HostGator is a unique experience. It’s definitely unlike any other office I’ve ever been a part of. Hopefully it always remains that way.

Gator Happenings August proved to be a record setting month for us here at HostGator, with over 26,000 sign-ups! The best part of all this is that we are currently so overstaffed that many of our employees have been complaining that there is no work for them to do. In the business world, a company that is overstaffed is traditionally looked upon as being mismanaged and/or poorly run. We have a different philosophy here and believe that the more overstaffed we are, the better it is for business. Being overstaffed allows us to provide a much higher caliber of support which in turn increases our reputation, and ultimately leads to faster growth. Many of you reading this may be worried that we may have grown too large to value a single account, however this is not and never will be the case. Should you ever have an issue with our traditional support mediums, simply request that your ticket be assigned to our owner, Brent. He will be more than happy to provide you with the V.I.P. attention that you deserve. HostGator Austin is still hiring! As you may have concluded, we have no plans to slow our hiring process, and currently we are aggressively seeking out experienced Linux administrators who are well-versed in cPanel and WHM. If you feel you may be a good candidate, you can find more information on our jobs page here . Not a computer guru? Not experienced in Linux administration? Not a problem! You can still get paid by HostGator for referring potential candidates that successfully complete 90 days of full-time employment. We are currently offering $2,500 for each qualified Admin you send us, and $500 for chat/phone techs. For more information on this, and to get started with your referrals, visit our referral page . Watch out GoDaddy! HostGator is mere weeks away from offering domain registration from our very own domain registrar service. Not only will the registration prices be significantly cheaper than GoDaddy, but you will also receive the legendary 24/7 around the clock support that you have come to know and love from HostGator. HostGator Abound You may have been seeing Snappy more and more lately. With our recent billboard placements, Nascar sponsorship, UFC fighter sponsorships, human inkings, and sponsorships of various other ventures, you may be asking, What’s next? Well, here it is: If you are a gamer, you will be seeing our hungry little gator on the trunks of a few fighters on the upcoming EA Sports: MMA! For more information on this game, and to pre-order, visit EA MMA’s page . That’s all for this month folks, until next month, stay happy, stay safe! – Daniel Collette and The HostGator team

AstraZeneca, which manufactures breast cancer drugs Arimidex and Tamoxifen, founded the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985. The aim of the NBCAM from the start has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer. HostGator.com is proud to announce it will be participating in Breast Cancer Awareness Month this year by turning “Snappy The Gator” pink on our website. We have also setup a special coupon code “PINK”, the coupon code will allow 20% off the first month of any hosting account we offer and we will donate the first month from every signup that uses this code to breast cancer research. We have also created a few banners for our clients who wish to let the world know that their web host cares and for our affiliates. Click Here to view the banners

Gator Happenings Hello everyone, We’ve been very busy around here lately, implementing new and exciting features and services that will provide our customers with an even better webhosting experience. Our domain registrar service is nearing completion, and we are also looking into other technologies and services that may be implemented as well. One of the services that we are pretty excited about it CloudFlare, so let’s dive right in and see what it’s all about. Gators and ninjas protecting your sites! We are proud to announce a new partnership with Cloudflare, Inc. to offer their Cloudflare protection to our customers. Cloudflare acts a transparent filtering proxy, sitting between your site and it’s visitors. Cloudflare blocks hackers and spammers from attacking your site, and also speeds up load times by acting as a content delivery network and serving cached copies of your static files from a proxy which is closer to your customers. On average, Cloudflare customers have seen a 30% improvement in page load times. In it’s basic mode, Cloudflare is free. We are the first host to integrate Cloudflare protection into our control panel. If you are a shared customer, you can enable Cloudflare protection for your domains by clicking on the orange Cloudflare icon in your control panel. We are working on a non-branded version for reseller, vps, and dedicated customers as well, but in the mean time our admins have a script to enable protection for any domain you would like. Simply open a ticket and let us know! Front Row Joe is spotted at HostGator! Our Houston employees were in for a treat when we found out that none other than Front Row Joe would be making a special appearance along with his #87 Nascar for photo opps and signature signing. Everyone had a great time taking photos and speaking with Joe, wishing him the best of luck for all of his upcoming races. Know L.A.M.P. ? We are still in search of Linux administrators with experience in cPanel/WHM. If you’d like to get paid doing what you already have a passion for, go ahead and check out our jobs page here . If you are not a Linux admin kind of person, but know someone who is, you can get paid by referring them, if they are hired on and stay with us for 90 days, you get paid! Visit our referral page for more information. We want your feedback! We are all about the customer here at HostGator. Having said that, we would like you to get involved and share your opinion as to what type of content you would like to see more of within our company blog. To share your opinion, and to offer your suggestions, please see our blog post here . That’s all for this month, until next month, stay prosperous. – Daniel Collette and The HostGator team HostGator Around the Web Did you know that HostGator has an active presence on both Twitter and Facebook?
Back in 2007 we leaked a company email from Brent Oxley , then HostGator CEO, to our blog. Since that time we’ve grown by leaps and bounds (to the tune of 610%), became the 21st fastest growing company on the Inc. 5000, added a new office location in Austin, TX, and are over 450 employees strong. With those feats, we’ve had our fair share of challenges along the way, however we’re all ready to bring HostGator to the next level. Below is the bulk of an internal e-mail from Brent Oxley sent on Nov. 18th, showcasing some big changes going on at HostGator. Hello Fellow Gators, I want everyone to read this so I’m going to start off with some fireworks… Every single Gator in the Houston office is getting a 10% raise starting immediately. This raise will be reflected on your next paycheck and will not take the place of any upcoming reviews, bonuses or other compensation you have coming. A while ago I sent a news email stating that once we had more automaton in place every employee would receive a raise. We don’t have the automation yet, but we are nearly there with the new billing system so I’ve decided to give part of it in advance. I believe through automation we will become 22%-30% more efficient with staffing. I’m really hoping this 10% raise is just the start and I hope to pass along every penny we save from automation to all of you. While remaining understaffed, HostGator is completely bloated at the same time. What very few of you understand is that some of our most underpaid employees are making over $100,000 a year while some of our most overpaid employees are making $30,000 a year. There are a few of us that perform on such a low level that if everyone did likewise the company would end up bankrupt. Likewise there are other employees that do the equivalent work of four or more of their peers. At HostGator, the sky really is the limit to what you can make, but in order for this to be the case you must always be learning and growing. You truly do create your own destiny at HostGator. Free Lunch for Everybody I’m temporarily taking away the lunch list and inviting everyone in both Austin as well as Houston to free lunches regardless of numbers, ratings, tardiness or absences. I’m going to think about making this a permanent change, but am not ready to make this decision just quite yet. This will go into effect on Monday the 22nd, which will give us a few days time to make arrangements with our vendors. Personal Browsing is Now Allowed You are all allowed to personal browse, respond quickly to a text message, and, in general, have more fun. Those who are doing this will not be written up, or punished in any shape or form. We are going to try giving you all more freedom and see what type of results we get. We are hoping some of the changes made will result in happier more productive employees. Of course if you do too much playing around it will reflect in your numbers, which will ultimately affect your pay and future growth at the company. If support gets out of control and everyone is slacking off we may have to undo this policy. Please help moderate each other, as I can see this having the potential to be taken advantage of. I’m placing a temporary freeze on write-ups for tardies and absences until further notice. Optional/Voluntary Relocation to Austin The Austin office is ready to start accepting voluntary re-locations for anyone who is looking for a change of scenery. We will not be providing relocation assistance if you decide to move to Austin. It makes no difference to us which office you work out of so we’re simply offering this as a perk. If you are interested in moving please contact HR. Depending on how much demand there is for relocation we may have to stagger the moves based on apartment leases expiring. HostGator is Not For Sale I have been shopping the possible sale of HostGator this last year and have finally decided that HostGator is no longer for sale. I received some very serious bids that would have made myself as well as many HostGator employees very rich. I turned down the bids for a multitude of reasons. The majority were turned down as I didn’t believe the number being offered reflected a large enough premium for what our future is worth. Other investors were turned down due to their plans of outsourcing your jobs. I couldn’t allow myself to walk away rich while putting many of you out on the streets. The last investment group we were in very serious talks with just couldn’t make it happen before the end of the year deadline I had. I do believe though that they would have been a great fit for the company and would have made many positive changes. My deadline for a possible sale has always been the end of 2010 and while they still want to acquire us, they are out of time. I’ve been sitting on my hands for far too long waiting on a sale to happen. I have great plans for us, and now that a sale is off the table there’s going to be major changes to make these plans a reality. The Future of the Company I’m going to do my best to take a much more active role with all of you. One of my goals is to meet with every employee individually to discuss ideas and possible changes to better all of our lives. There are a lot of us now (over 430 people), so please be patient with me. Once we are a little further along with systems integration and automation I want to introduce a new optional pay scale. I want to structure this new system so that pay is almost 100% based off of performance. Those who work hard will make 30%+ more then what they’re making now. Those who don’t work hard will never be penalized they simply won’t reach their full earning potential. I envision this ticket / chat / phone system updating real time with how much you’ve made as if it’s some type of video game. With this type of system we could even possibly get rid of schedules completely. If you don’t want to ever come to work you wouldn’t have to. If you want to put in extra hours you would make that much more. What’s more American than being rewarded for working harder than the next guy (or gal)? I’m going to hire a design firm to begin work immediately on designing a kick ass game room for Houston. This game room will take up the entire first floor of the building and should be just as nice as Austin’s. Houston is very close to being maxed out on space. Once this is done I’m going to turn the current training room into ongoing training for all employees. I want to put a serious emphasis on developing chat techs into admins and turning lvl 1 admins into upper tier administrators. We do not want Hostgator to be resume padding. We want you to be part of the family here and develop your skills, add new tools to your skillet, and have your compensation reflect that appropriately. We are going to come up with a program so that employees can propose projects they want to develop. If you have a great idea there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to use company resources to make it happen. There will be a screening and approval process so be thorough in your proposals! These projects won’t even necessarily have to be hosting related. I’m sure there are many of you sitting on multi million dollar ideas. Let’s cash in together! You are all on the ground floor of what’s going to turn into a billion dollar company. With time, many of you are going to become extremely rich. This next year we will be going directly after GoDaddy’s business. I plan on investing over a million dollars a month into TV commercials. We are going to grow extremely fast, much faster then any growth we’ve ever seen before. HostGator is a company that has always promoted from within and with the growth that lies ahead we will be need to expand our management team exponentially. I can see us having to open offices all over the country in order to keep up with staffing, and I can also visualize many of you here being called to run your very own office. We need managers! Lead by example! I apologize for what may be HostGator’s longest news email in history. I had a lot to cover and wanted to get as fresh of a new start as possible with all of you. We know morale is low, and we know that many of you are unhappy with the status quo. What we want now is to include everyone on working to improve while we become the worlds largest hosting company. Sincerely, Brent Oxley

Greetings, We have some exciting news and updates for you this month about our new domain registry service, a sneak peek at our new upcoming domain management control panel, our billing system migration and a tour of our new HostGator Austin Office (now fully loaded, HostGator style). Our billing system migration is nearly complete! With over 99% of our existing customer base having already been transferred, we expect to be fully migrated to our own GatorBill very shortly. This switch brings a faster and more efficient billing experience for our customers (as we’re sure you’ve already experienced). GatorBill is just one of the many new programs we have developed over the last few years to make your experience here at HostGator better than any other hosting company. What about that registrar thing? As many of you are aware, we announced that we would be coming out with our very own, integrated domain registration service. It’s taken us a little bit longer than we anticipated, but that’s because we’re wanting to make it right! We are working incredibly hard to bring this to you as soon as we can and we anticipate this being available within the next several weeks (beginning of 2011). This new domain registry service is going to allow you to register, transfer and manage your domain names AND your hosting all from within one control panel. We are also working around the clock to bring out our own domain registrar, LaunchPad (Watch out GoDaddy!)! We are anticipating LaunchPad’s release within the first quarter of 2011. LaunchPad will provide all of the same support and reliability that HostGator customers have come to expect, as well as allowing clients the convenience of registering and managing all of their domains right along side their hosting. We know this is going to be great for us as well as our customers, and we simply can’t wait. Here’s an exclusive, sneak peek at our new upcoming domain management control panel: Click here to see all screen shots. All set in Austin, TX. We’ve moved in! We last showed you our Austin office shortly after we purchased it and it was still nearly empty. We’ve now loaded the office with only the best (HostGator Style!) and we wanted to share with you what our Austin office now looks like. Come Join us Now that you’ve gotten to see inside of our cool new office, why not come and work here?! We’re Hiring! If you’d like to get paid doing what you already have a passion for, go ahead and check out our jobs page .
